Why refocus efforts for monitoring COVID-19 in communities?

22 Apr 2022
Emerging Pandemics

With current levels of population immunity and tools available, the focus should be shifted away from eliminating SARS-CoV-2 transmission and toward more relevant metrics. Community efforts should be directed toward mitigating the severity of severe COVID-19 illness on health and society. Community transmission indicators were developed in the fall of 2020 (prior to vaccine availability) and reflect the goal of limiting transmission in anticipation of vaccine availability. To evaluate potential thresholds, this article employs correlation analyses and thresholds from Community Profile Reports and State Profile Reports. To optimize the levels, multiple analyses with different indicator thresholds were performed. When compared to community transmission, COVID-19 community levels consistently provided better predictions. COVID-19 community levels can be used to inform recommendations for community-level prevention strategies and individual prevention behaviors.
