Transgenders in India, especially those whose gender identities differ from their biological sex, face stigma, marginalization, and discrimination. They also have the highest incidence of HIV. This paper studies experiences of transgender sex workers in light of social discrimination at the micro, meso, and macro levels, and the resulting vulnerability to HIV. The research also describes the various coping mechanisms and survival strategies that members of this group adopt. It recommends community and policy-level interventions that take their coping mechanisms into account. This paper is useful for designing and implementing HIV interventions, as well as useful for frontline health workers serving transgender communities.
