Until COVID-19 took over, tuberculosis was the world's most
deadly infectious disease. Now that it is number two, it is still concerning.
The topic for this year's World Tuberculosis Day, which is marked on March 24,
is "Yes! We can put an end to TB!" At a time when there have been
significant losses in the fight to eradicate tuberculosis, this is a crucial
and compelling message that can inspire optimism, urge high level leadership,
and increase investment. Incidence of tuberculosis climbed by 5% for the first
time in 20 years, and fatalities rose from 1.5 million in 2020 to 1 million in
2021, according to the Global Tuberculosis Report 2022. The 2020 End TB
Strategy milestones, which targeted to reduce incidence and mortality by 20%
and 35%, respectively, have not been met.
