Survive and Thrive: Care for Newborns

27 Aug 2020
Maternal & Child Health

by UNICEF, WHO 180 min read

75% of neonatal deaths occur in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. A study of survey data from 63 countries with high burdens of neonatal mortality suggests that if all households from these regions had the same risk of neonatal death as the wealthiest 20% of the population, neonatal mortality could be reduced by 16%. Access to quality healthcare, particularly appropriate inpatient care, can give newborns the opportunity to survive and thrive. This report by UNICEF and the WHO identifies ways to transform care for at-risk newborns. The findings in this report can inform policy, program design, and implementation of newborn health programs.
