Share of Current Unmet Need for Modern Contraceptive Methods

21 Aug 2020

Mission Pariwar Vikas aims to reduce the overall fertility rate by 2.1 by 2025. In light of this, understanding data sets, causes, and trends that lead to changes in uptake of contraceptives is imperative to map the way forward. This report focuses on the reasons for the high unmet need for contraceptives amongst Indian women who were past users and may have discontinued use. It categorizes the reasons for discontinuation into 6 categories and measures the share of current unmet need for modern contraceptive methods attributed to past users of these methods in India. The emphasis on the continuation of contraceptive use, along with bringing in new users, could be one of the key strategies for India to achieve its Family Planning goals.
