Overcoming Stigma Due to Tuberculosis

26 Jun 2020

A total of 423,000 people died from TB in India in 2017. TB is curable but success rates depend upon the timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment. There are many barriers to access the right care for TB patients, one of the largest barriers is the stigma attached to it. According to the Global Coalition of Tuberculosis Activists, stigma and discrimination hinder people from accessing and providing care across the Asia Pacific and Africa — which makes it a critical challenge to end TB. This factsheet presents data on discrimination faced by TB patients and how awareness campaigns, health workers, and TB support groups can help educate and empower TB patients and the general public.
