Optimizing Community Health Worker Programmes for HIV Services

07 Jan 2022
HIV/AIDS Health System Strengthening

by World Health Organization 40 MIN READ

CHWs have a key role to play in primary health care; in the context of a maturing HIV epidemic, investment in this workforce offers opportunities to integrate HIV activities within primary care delivery. This guide identifies interventions in prevention, testing, treatment, care, clinical management and support services for the HIV and related co-morbidities for which there is evidence that community health workers can provide safe and effective care in HIV. It also provides policy recommendations on how to design, implement and optimize CHW programmes as part of broader health workforce and service delivery strategies that are acceptable to communities and can be sustained. Finally, it outlines key knowledge gaps that should be addressed through further research. The recommendations address selection, certification and training; management, remuneration and supervision; and systems integration and community engagement.  This is a useful guide for implementers.  Click here to read the document.
