Offline: How to fix pandemic preparedness

23 May 2022

Many nations were making steady progress toward SDG 3.4, which calls for lowering premature death from NCDs by a third from 2015 to 2030. The pandemic stymied those gains, wreaking havoc on health systems, diverting resources, and capturing media attention. However, one essential feature concerning COVID-19 is universally acknowledged. Those with pre-existing chronic conditions were hit the hardest by the virus. It's remarkable that people in charge of attempts to protect communities from the next epidemic haven't completely embraced this lesson. Rivalries between several global health tribes may be preventing collaboration. Trying to incorporate NCDs into an already complicated jigsaw of measures may seem futile to pandemic planners. In emphasizing the link between COVID-19 and NCDs, WHO has demonstrated persuasive thought leadership. The World Health Organization advises that NCD prevention and control programs be integrated into COVID-19 response and recovery operations. Upstream initiatives, particularly primary health care systems, are recommended by the World Bank and WHO. In this era of dual burden, this article shares how COVID 19 methods can work along with NCDs to maximize benefit.
