Method Switching Index Can Predict Contraceptive Continuation

28 Aug 2020

The Evidence Project, part of the RASTA initiative led by the Population Council, conducted a longitudinal study of married women in Haryana and Odisha. The study concluded that adding a question about method switching to the questionnaire for the Method Information Index (MII) may lead to better contraceptive continuation- the revised MII is called MIIplus. This study reports findings to demonstrate that the discontinuation of modern methods of contraceptives is lower when women receive information about method switching when one method fails or causes side effects. Implementers and donors who rely on the MII for estimates can use MIIplus to monitor the quality of care and contraceptive counseling in family planning services.
