The Government of India has made concerted efforts in putting into action policies and programs that resonate with sustainable development goals, focusing on reducing Under Five Mortality Rate (U5MR) and Neonatal Mortality Rate, ensuring universal access to health coverage and an increase in recruitment, development, training and the retention of health care service providers.
Under the oversight of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), the programs to achieve national health policy goals are being implemented collaboratively with relevant ministries, sectors, and developmental partners both at the national and state level. Activities to achieve the health goals in the policy range from prioritization of geographies for strengthening of services to the free treatment for poor families in the country. The six health system building blocks in the framework are - Health Service Delivery; Health System Workforce; Health Information System; Procurement and Supply Chain for access to essential medicines; Finance, Planning and Payments; and Leadership and Governance.
This publication presents 36 interventions, practices implemented, and case studies across the country and highlights the lessons learned through selected Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) continuum of care initiatives in the context of these Health System Building blocks.
