National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) undertakes model-based biennial HIV estimations in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This biennial exercise aims to provide an update on the current status of the HIV epidemic in the country at the district level. This publication studies key epidemiological parameters of HIV prevalence, new infections and AIDS related mortality. The report reiterates that while the country is on track to achieving reduction in AIDS-related deaths, fast-tracking the progress to targets for reduction in new HIV infections remains a priority. District level disaggregation of estimates will provide a granular understanding of the epidemic which may help in prioritization of activities at the sub-national level and strengthen the AIDS response at the local level.
