Implications of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness waning for public health

29 Apr 2022
Emerging Pandemics

by Cristina Menni and colleagues 5 MIN

Controlling the COVID-19 pandemic will necessitate a significant investment in public health. To prevent severe disease and deaths, maintain functioning health systems, and limit viral spread at the population level, efforts should be focused on optimizing vaccination strategies and coverage. We require new and reliable evidence in light of a rapidly changing context. The research adds to the body of knowledge about vaccine-derived population protection against the ongoing pandemic. When a large portion of the world's population still lacks access to primary immunization, vaccine messaging should focus on efficacy against severe outcomes and death rather than breakthrough infections to maintain public trust in vaccines, especially as non-pharmaceutical interventions (e.g., mask-wearing and physical separation) are being phased out.
