Mixed health systems are a reality in low- and middle-income countries. This article analyzes the lessons learned by countries that have been able to implement effective governance of mixed health systems and have identified 4 evidence-based principles for Private Sector Engagement (PSE) that policymakers and private health care providers can consider. These are:
1. Governments correct market failures through a mix of tools (Regulatory, financial, and informational) to ensure appropriate health services are delivered.
2. Approaches are defined by “problems” that the country is facing and not “solutions" that are pre-designed.
3. To ensure UHC objectives are prioritized, PSE policies are based on sound data through market analysis and provider/consumer research.
4. Private sector needs to be engaged in a meaningful dialogue with key stakeholders.
