The World Health Organisation (WHO) on February 01, 2022, released a report 'Global analysis of healthcare waste in the context of COVID-19’ written by the ‘Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Health Unit’ of WHO. The report estimates the additional COVID-19 healthcare waste generated through the UN procurement system, describes the status of the current healthcare waste management system, and draws emerging solutions to reduce the impact of waste on human and environmental health. In the report, estimates of healthcare waste generated from PPE kits, testing kits, and vaccinations are based on United Nations COVID-19 Supply Portal from March 2020 to November 2021. The analysis does not include large amounts of COVID-19 commodities that have been procured outside the UN system nor COVID-19 related waste generated by masses such as the use of medical masks.
Some of these solutions already exist and are drawn from the case studies from multiple countries including India.
