COVID-19 and Backsliding of Routine Immunization

12 Nov 2021

According to WHO and UNICEF, 23 million children missed out on basic vaccines through routine immunization services in 2020 – 3.7 million more than in 2019.  This article provides data on the decline in administration of the first vital vaccine to children. It also stresses the fact that this evidence is a warning that the COVID-19 pandemic and related disruptions have cost the world valuable ground in immunization and the consequences will be paid for by the lives and wellbeing of the most vulnerable.  The article highlights the efforts being made by multilateral agencies to strengthen immunization systems and halve the number of entirely unvaccinated, or ‘zero dose’ children across the world. This is a useful article for immunization program implementers. Click here to read the article.
